Chiropractic Care for Baseball & Softball Players

Baseball and Softball Injuries
Baseball and softball can be very hard on the body, especially for youth athletes. There are many factors that can contribute to shoulder and elbow pain. Over-throwing is one of the most common causes of shoulder and elbow pain. However, you can still experience injury and pain even if you are not over-throwing. These types of injuries typically occur from poor arm mechanics or release points for specific pitches. For example, over-supinating on a curveball could produce medial elbow pain. It is important for youth athletes to get a full shoulder and elbow evaluation prior to the season to decrease their likelihood of becoming injured.
Proactive & Preventative Treatment
At HD Performance Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on being proactive in treatment instead of being reactive. We want to look ahead and fix any poor mechanics before the season begins to avoid injury. Coming in for routine performance care can keep athletes feeling their best and can keep them injury free throughout the season. The season can be long and grueling, especially with long tournaments on the weekend. Tournaments combined with weekly practice can cause tightness in the elbow and shoulder. Chiropractic care can help work through the tightness before any true injuries develop.
Thoracic Mobility
Thoracic mobility is another key component in pitching velocity. If you do not have good mobility throughout the thoracic spine, then you will be limited in your range of motion and you will rely solely on your arm, therefore increasing the strain placed on the arm. We want to be sure you are moving freely around the thoracic spine to promote good mechanics and decrease the strain placed on the elbow and shoulder. Not only could this increase our velocity, but it could also keep you injury free. At HD Performance Chiropractic we perform a full body range of motion. We address any segmental restrictions an athlete may have. We use manual therapy and Rock Blade tools to work on the surrounding musculature, and then we provide adjustments to the restricted joint segments. This helps to improve the athlete’s range of motion and improve performance.
What do the Pros think?
All 30 MLB teams use a chiropractor on their staff. Additionally, chiropractic care has been utilized by the NFL and NBA. You may remember Max Scherzer not being able to pitch in game 5 of the 2019 world series. He credits his quick recovery and ability to pitch in game 7 to his chiropractor. Chiropractic care is extremely important in keeping athletes healthy and pain free.
